Oxycontin is a potent narcotic used in the management of moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time. It's imperative that you don't drink alcohol while taking a Narcotic due to an increased risk of severe respiratory depression. Avoid Oxycontin if you have had arecent episode of asthma exacerbation or if you have a current bowel obstruction. Do not stop using OxyContin suddenly after long term use, and reduce your dose gradually to avoid withdrawal reactions. Take the whole tablet and do not crush, chew, or break the tablet its designed for an extended-release use. Concomitant use of alcohol or other nacotics may be fatal. Go to the hospital emergency department if you experience difficulty breathing or severe weakness.

I just got put on opana for pain, should I of asked for oxycontin instead?
Has anyone been on this drup? It is oxymorphone which I guess is a form of morphine?? It is supposedly 2x stronger than oxycontin. I was wondering if anyone has been on this or had any good/bad results while taking this med. Should I of asked for oxycontin instead? Please tell me anything you know about this drug. Thanks.

What is the difference between oxycontin and black tar heroin?
Is heroin stronger than oxycontin? Can you get high by smoking oxycontin?

Sounds like you just want to get high. Try black tar heroin and watch your life go down the drain fast. It is one of the most addictive substances out there and can get you arrested a lot faster then abusing a pain med. Not that I think you should do either but you did ask.

And if this is for a legitimate injury/problem, no doctor I know of is going to prescribe or suggest an illegal, highly addictive substance over a legal-to-prescribe medication.

What is the normal amount of Oxycontin tablets prescribed?
For any average, monthly prescribed oxycontin user, how many pills would they be prescribed a month? How often are they allowed to refill? When being started on oxycontin, what is the general starting dosage? And how quickly can the dosage rise?

Oxycontin IS a maintenance medication and SHOULD be used for chronic pain only. Disregard the previous answer.

Oxycontin is an extended-release medication that is prescribed in 12-hour intervals, therefore as long as you only need to take one table to achieve the required dose, a month's supply will always be 60 tablets.

Oxycontin is a Schedule-II controlled substance and therefore not refillable at all in most states. Each fill requires a new written prescription from your doctor. Assuming the first fill is for 30 days (The maximum allowable quantity of a Schedule-II in this state), your doctor/pharmacy/insurance will usually allow another prescription to be filled after 25 to 27 days.

Oxycontin comes in 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 80mg tablets. If this is the first extended-release opioid you will be taking, then you will usually start with a lower dosage. Your body will quickly build up a tolerance to this medication and will require a higher dosage to maintain the same level of pain-control. Therefore the dosage increase may be fairly rapid. Consequently, when one is taken off of this medication, there will be a weaning process.

Hope this helps.

What is the difference between oxycontin and oxycodone?
My mom is going thru cancer and has been on percocet (oxycodone + acetaminophen) for a year and recently her oncologist put her on oxycontin every 12 hours and percocet for breakthrough pain as needed. Is oxycontin just a long term or delayed release form of oxycodone or something different entirely? We just want to understand what she's on.

Percocet is a mixture of oxycodone and APAP (acetaminophen) like you said. Oxycotin is pure oxycodone with a time release effect. Oxycotin comes in much higher doses of oxycodone than percocet.

I am experiencing oxycontin withdrawal despite new rx for opana er.?
Hi
I took oxycontin for many years for a severe pain condition - lyme induced fibromyalgia/arthralgia with nerve pain. I went cold turkey from oxycontin to opana because it wasn't supposed to cause withdrawals but I am having really bad withdrawals. Note - never abused it. Help!

What was your dosage of OxyContin, and what is your dosage of Opana? If the conversion was done properly, you should not be experiencing any opioid withdrawal symptoms. Especially since oxymorphone (Opana) is one of the main metabolites of oxycodone (OxyContin).

I have painful kidney stones and take Percodan when needed for pain?
I am running out and have Oxycontin from my past kidney stones. Percodan and Oxycontin are supposedly the same except Percodan has aspirin in it. Why when I take Oxycontin, I get so nauseated and dizzy and vomit constantly? Why when Percodan I am just normal? I dont take them often either.

How much oxycontin will it take to overdose?
I have a friend who uses oxycontin for recreational use and he chews it up. I read online that this was dangerous. How much would it take to kill him?

It varies from person to person. It all depends on the metabolism and this shifts not only person to person but also at different times. A dose that may have been safe for him to ingest now won't necessarily be safe in the future, get it?
If he is chewing this stuff, he's got serious problems already. Try to call around and get him some help.
Good luck.

How much Oxycodone is in 30MG Oxycontin?
I know that part of the Oxycontin pills contain stuff like Tylenol or Aspirin or something like that. Does anyone know the exact amount? Thanks!
Another Question: If the 30MG relates to the Oxycodone, then is there anything else in the pill?

It is true that Percocet typically contains anywhere between 325 and 750mg of Aspirin in it, but nothing that exceeds 10mg of oxycodone in it will EVER have Aspirin or Acetaminophen (APAP) in it.

Oxycontin (which ranges from 10mg to 160mg of oxy.)actually does not contain any Tylenol or Acetaminophen. Oxycontin stands for oxycodone continuous release, which is a time release that only contain bindings (for time release) and dyes (for the coating around it) and releases oxycodone gradually over a 12 hour period.

As far as 30mg. oxycodone, that is an the highest immediate release form of oxycodone available and contains pure oxycodone with no bindings and definitely no Tylenol or Aspirin.

I'm sure you know that oxycodone containing pills are the most addicting pills on the market and if not used properly and/or are mixed with the wrong meds (respiratory depressors mostly) you can literally stop breathing. In FL oxycodone claims an average of 7 lives a day via overdoing, so be careful and best of luck to you.

Oxycontin is time release hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is Vicodin. It is synthetic codine. The problem with Oxycontin is that there is so much of the drug in a capsule which has little time release pellets in it. People that want to get high crush the pellets so that they aren't time release anymore. Then they either take it by mouth or dissolve it in distilled water and inject it. A friend of mine died a few years ago from overdosing on it. And it is highly addictive no matter how you take it, as are all narcotics.

Drug Test result will show it up as Opiates. Not all tests would find it, it will depend on the cut-off the drug test they do but still you would show as positive. And unless you have prescription for it, it can be a problem.

OxyContin And Morphine Sulfate the Same?
So I was wondering if Morphine Sulfate was the generic pill for Oxycontin? Or the other way around? Or are they just two completely different drugs?
Thanks in advance!

No they aren't the same. I was prescribed Oxycontin and Oxycodone because I have lung cancer. The Oxycontin was taken twice a day every day, and the Oxycodone was taken whenever I had breakthrough pain in between. The doctor switched me to Morphine Sulfate because the Oxy's weren't working that great. The Morphine works much better.

Which is Better Oxycontin vs Avinza?
I was perscribed Oxycontin 60 mg twice a day for chronic back pain due to ruptured dics. The oxycontin relieved the pain to some extent but I became very constipated. I was previously on Vicodin for 2 years that did not have that side affect and now have been switched to Avinza 60 mg once per day. The Avinza is ok, but seems to be not as strong as the Oxy was in taking the pain away but with out the side affect. I am not sure what direction to head at this point, should I go back to the Oxy at a higher dose and deal with the side affect go with the Avinza at a higher dose, or is there some kind of supplement to either or both. Thanks

OxyCodone vs OxyContin?
I've been prescribed OxyCodone with APAP for a back injury. A friend of mine offered me an oxycontin. He said it was the same thing just without the aspirin/acetaminophen added in. I'm looking at this from a legal standpoint. If I were to be drug tested would it show up differently or as the same thing? And please no "you shouldn't mess with such and such", I just want an answer to my question. Thanks for any help.

Has anyone experienced hematuria or slight bleeding after urinating when taking Oxycontin?
I was wondering if anyone else or anyone know what the chances are of experiencing some very light bleeding from urethra when taking Oxycontin/Oxycodone? Since I have started it, I have had about 2 to 3 times a week some pale pink blood on tissue after I urinate. I have had urinalysis and all came back negative on culture for any bacteria. Thank you!

what is stronger ms contin or oxycontin?
Ok, I'm going to have a medical operaton done soon, and I just wanted to know what was the stronger Oxycontin, or MS contin? I'm having my knee broke in 4 places, so worst pain you could think of...so what one would be the best for my pain?

They are the same. For someone that's had 2 knee surgeries; and one more to come... Oxycodone works best. You could also ask to get a Femoral pain catheter that would basically keep you pain free for 5 days; that is what I'm having done for my next surgery.

Oxycodone is the name of the narcotic in Oxycontin.

Oxycontin contains oxycodone, but is 'continuous release', hence it's name.

Basically, the reason you never hear of anyone getting hooked on oxycodone is because it is quite difficult to obtain in a pure form, due to the increased potential for abuse. Generally, a NSAID such as paracetamol or aspirin is added, so an overdose would also cause severe pain due to liver damage. Examples include percocet (oxycodone and paracetamol) and percodan (oxycodone and aspirin).

Also, oxycodone is generally sold under some sort of trade name, so you wouldn't hear the word "oxycodone" used to refer to an addiction, just as someone with a Vicodan problem wouldn't say they had a "hydrocodone" addiction.

Help! Trying to get off Oxycontin! I was prescribed them, now doctors won't help me get off!?
I have been prescribed oxycontin for my terrible terrible terrible pain from a very bad car accident. It has been 2 months since the accident and I WANT to come off oxycontin. However, every time I go to a doctor, they tell me to just STOP taking it. First of all, I am afraid that I may have a dependency on it (though I only allow myself to take ONE a day-10 mg time release).

I take Motrin when I feel the pain coming on, however at some point in the day, I feel so sick and have SO much pain that motrin won't help; that's when I take the oxy.

I know that there is rehab, but I would like to NOT have that, considering I am in no condition to drive.

I am asking about a 'stepping stone' sort of pain medicine to help me off (an OTC-no more narcotics!!!).

A friend mentioned Epilim (Sodium Valproate) or Depakene, and immodium AD.

Please help me, because the doctors won't =(
I have to get off them because A.) everyone is telling me to get off them and B.) the doctor does NOT believe me when I tell him I'm still in a lot of pain

=(

Since you've only been taking the Oxycontin for 2 months, it may very well be possible for you to stop taking it; however, the best way to come off of pain medication (and any medication) is to wean off, specifically 10% per week.

You're on just about the smallest dose possible, which is probably why your doctor told you to just stop taking it. You may be able to get 5 mg. pills, but I'm not even sure about that. At such a low dose, you aren't likely to see many withdrawal symptoms, if any at all...and if you do get them, they're likely to be mild.

I don't think you would need to consider rehab unless you feel you are addicted (vs. dependant) and have issues that are going to stop you from using it.

There are no over-the-counter medications that "replace" narcotics or stop the withdrawal symptoms. If you are still in pain after stopping the Oxycontin, you can use Ibuprofen and/or Acetominophen to treat your pain. I'm just curious though - why stop the Oxycontin if you're still in pain?

oxycontin?
i found a small, white pill that has a large "M" on it with numbers on the other side. I was told it was an oxycontin. Is this true?
The numbers on the other side are 05/52 I think - the pill is very small. Also - the "M" is inside of a tiny square. Thanks for any help.

Anytime you don't know what a pill is call the poison control center and they will gladly tell you. You may have to tell them why you are asking. Addicts abuse this privilege often to verify pills they aren't familiar with or are new to the market.

First off what is the dose of morphine sulphate or is it MS Contin? that you are currently getting that doesn't work for the pain. I take morphine at a dose of 60 mg and have to take two pills twice a day. At the beginning though, my doctor gave me a very small dose of only 15 mg. So you see the dose makes a difference. Especially since you have been on Oxycontin for awhile. I think Oxycontin works great too, too bad they won't pay for it anymore. Demerol is not good because it is not an extended release pain medication. Try and see if your insurance will cover Opana. Opana is a oxy/morphone an extended release version of Dilaudid. If this doesn't work for you, get back to me via email and I can suggest something else for you. Also what state are you in, maybe I can help you find a pain doctor in your area. Why did your insurance stop paying for the oxycontin and what type of insurance private or medi-cal?

Question about Levomepromazine and opioids.......?
im just doing some research on drug interactions and when i looked up Levonmepromazine it said this "If levomepromazine is given concomitantly with opiates, the opioid-dose should be reduced (by approx. 50%), because levomepromazine massively amplifies the therapeutic actions and side-effects of opiates."
what exactly does this mean? does it mean that if someone lets say normally takes 20 mg of Oxycontin a day, that if they take this drug as well with it, they would only need to take 10 mg of it to reach the same effect??? how does it do that? does it just increase the effectiveness of the oxycontin or does it trick your body into thinking you have more? does this also mean over-dosing becomes more dangerous/easier. i also dont understand where it says it amplifies the side effects. are they talking about normal opioid side effects like itching, constipation, ect or do they mean overdose side effects like convulsions or respiratory depression??? is it best to just avoid combining these 2 drugs? also i read that levomepromazine is a stong analgesic, but if thats true then why isnt it as addictive or abused like oxycontin or other pain killers?
Alex
02/02/10
Reply
First off the reason it potents it is because the place where oxycodone is processed. levomepromazine inhibits the same enzyme that is required for oxycodone to be broken down, when it takes over the enzyme the oxycodone isn't going to be broken down as quickly thus resulting in a longer more potent high. the same affect happens with Dextromethorphan and grape juice (Grape juice inhibits the enzyme that breaks it down thus potenting the affects). Yes it does make it ALLOT easy'r to overdose on. Yes also the reason for the potenting of the side affects is because the body cant break down the oxycodone thats flooding the system and does things that would be considered a side affect. The reason it is not abused like Opiates is just as you said its a analgesic, the same type of medicine thats in Advil, Aleeve, and Tylenol. It just doesnt produce the euphoria and happyness that comes around with opiates. Could you imagine if Advil got you high?

what is better for pain management fentanyl patches of buprenex?
I herd that the Buprenex is also a very strong narcotic pain killer and that it has less side-effects to it than fentanyl or Oxycontin. I am very allergic to some of the ingredients in the Oxycontin and the Fentanyl Patches leave marks on my skin that never go away. Does anybody know what other medications that would work for extremly bad chronic spinal pain? I am on 45Mg's of Morphine Sulfate Extend Release right now and 4mgs of dilaudid. But both of the medications are not working as well for me anymore and I need some advice on what might be a good choice for me to ask my pain clinic doctor!

I`ve tried the Fentanyl patches and was allergic to the material that they were made out of. Tried another brand, and that was much better. BUT, my complaint about the transdermal patches is that I found that they would only work on day 2. Day 1 - sort of, Day 2 - good, Day 3 - not so good.

In any case, prior to having spinal surgery (L1-L5 fusion) I found the pain was well controlled (for me) with morphine AND methadone tablets. Your doctor would have to find the dosage that is right for you, but it saved my life!

Best of luck - I *know* what you are going through.

What is the difference between oxycontin 10 mg and 15 mg ms contin?
Sir Donny Prince of Dover
01/06/11
Reply
Oxycontin contains the chemical oxycodone, MS Contin contains the chemical morphine. That is really the only difference. Both are taken orally, both are designed to release over 12 hours (usually given twice a day, however sometimes both are given more frequently), both are schedule 2 narcotics, and have practically identical side effect profiles. It really comes down to patient preference since they are so similar.
Please keep in mind, 1mg of oxycodone is equivalent to 12 mg of morphine. This means that if a patients pain is controlled on 100mg of Oxycontin a day, the appropriate dose of MS Contin would be approximately 1200mg a day. Narcotic Equivalence Calculators can be found free online (http://www.medcalc.com/narcotics.html) and are help-full when changing from one pain med to another.
Oxycontin comes as 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, and 160mg tablets
MS Contin comes as 15, 30, 60, 100, and 200mg tablets
So, 10mg of Oxycontin would be equivalent to 120mg of MS Contin and 15mg of MS Contin would be equivalent to 1.25mg of Oxycontin.

Oxycodone and itching?
I have taken oxycodone for about 5 years for breakthrough severe Restless Legs Syndrome in both my legs and arms. While the dose is moderate (usually less that 20mg of an evening) for treatment of RLS and it has never been an abuse issue for me, suddenly, I have developed head to toe itching. I use straight oxycodone without any aspirin or acetomenaphen, There is no rash, but I itch in some pretty personal areas. Benadryl will exacerbate the RLS. Any suggestions as to what and when to take it
It is straight Oxycodone not Oxycontin. I got 5mg tabs so I could easily take only what I need to control the symptoms. Oxycontin did not work that well and make me dopey. I am surprise about the fuss with Oxycodone. I have never gotten any high from it - just might get a bit sleepy. I avoid the benzodiazopine as they make me dopey and may exacerbate the RLS. Had it since I was a kid. I am a 56 year old retired RN (ER and Infection Control) and it is getting worse every year.

Oxycontin comes in 20 mg., I'm not sure about Oxycodone, thought it was categorized as 325 mg. Acetaminophen with 5 mg. Oxy, or just 5 mg. Oh well, keep up the Benadryl. Also, I don't understand your itching, I have only seen it after Epidurals and Morphine. I don't think you need any Oxy drug at all. You should take the Beta Blocker Propranolol 20 mg. for the restless leg syndrome. Valium or Diazepam works too, and doctors may not know that, I do.
