Is povidone iodine injestable?
I know that povidone iodine is used as a topical wound or pre-operative incision cleanser...yet, I have just read someone on the internet touting a cruciferous vegetable diet which also includes drinking a glass of water with 2 drops of povidone iodine every day. They suggest that this solution, taken internally, becomes growth hormone in the thyroid which fuels the growth of your brain and body. Any comments?

I wouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. Povidone iodine solution is a topical disinfectant and is toxic if ingested. Same as swallowing isopropyl alcohol. Not a good idea.

Should I use Povidone Iodine to clean my ear piercing?
I also have erythromycin which seems to be working pretty well. Is Povidone Iodine better?

Which one is safer? and which one will help my hole heal faster?

Reply
Neither will help it heal faster unless it is infected. If it is just a new piercing use plain water and mild soap, otherwise it can get more irritated and destroy new tissue from growing/healing.

Betadine (povidone-Iodine) for acne?
My friend is asking me about povidone-iodine as a topical antiseptic for acne. what do you think?

Iodine can aggravate acne...right?

Why her doctor recommends this product? I'm confused.. Iodine is bad for acne prone skin... But in betadine Indication it says that it is for acne.

Help!

for 5 dollars american, have your friend try this
raw unpasturized apple cider vinegar..
the following 2 testimonials can be seen at http://www.earthclinic.com/cures/acne.ht...
Angelina O, has found that applying ACV topically to her face several times a day (4 or more times) has cured her of a "very bad complexion". She reports that she applies it straight and that while it burns her skin a bit, it still works like a miracle!

Cheryl writes, "My daughter developed a case of moderate acne, and after trying a number of different things for over a year which helped very little or not at all, she started drinking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar three times a day and applying it topically once at night. She has been acne free for two months. It took about three weeks to clear up."

you can get it at the health food store, or in some super market health food sections.
good luck

I have no experience using povidone internally.
I have only used it as topical applications to
cleanse or to wash out an infected area such
as cellulitis. (skin infection/inflammation).

Using povidone iodine on a finger cut?
Guys, I injured my finger tonight while to a repair to my house. Basically a aluminum sheet cut my left thumb (right above the knuckle). Its a rather deep cut and the sheet fell about 2 feet directly onto my finger.

I took a shower and clean the cut with soap and water to the best of my ability (to the point that i was about to scream like a 5 year old). My father used povidone iodine (10%)and neosporin on my finger.

no serious pain unless i spread open the cut, i have full mobility with it.

1) no rust on the aluminum, do i need a shot of some sort?
2) is povidone-iodine okay for this?
3) any other tips?

thanks in advance guys.

aluminum doesnt rust, you should have a tetnus shot once every ten years, wrap the cut so it doesnt spread open, and the neosporin is good, you should be ok.

Is it safe if I use Betadine gargle every night for tonsillitis prevention?
Because I am worried if I will suffer side effects of too much iodine absorption in the body like thyroid desease and hypothyroidism since the betadine gargle's ingredients are povidone and iodine. thanks in advance.

The easiest way to prevent tonsillitis is anti-bacterial soap (for your hands not your throat). It is spread through germs and gargling betadine isn't going to do you a bit of good. Rare to hear of someone getting tonisllitis in the summer anyway.

No, for the love of GOD and all things holy, do NOT do that!!! You think you have a problem now with a yeast infection, wait and see what happens if you douche with that.... echhh. First of all, douching in general is bad. You have bacteria in your vagina. It's ok and it's NORMAL. It's a good thing! When you have an overgrowth of the yeast (due to various different reasons) it's called a yeast infection. But you're supposed to have a normal amount of bacteria there and douching messes up that balance and predisposes you to infections. Douching = Bad. At least it's only one dose of the antibiotic, it would be worse if you had to take it for a week or something. After being diagnosed by your Gyn (self diagnosing is generally not the best idea) you could consider an insert or the suppositories used at night. Not exactly a cream so it might be more comfortable for you. Whatever you decide please do not douche with povidone iodine.

I would not. Iodine stains so bad it is difficult to tell if your skin is becoming inflamed from infection. Use cold water or butter first, then if it blisters, get some antibacterial salve and if it is charred, see an ER. If much is blistered, see an ER soon. Don't want you getting blood poisoning or going into shock. Good luck.

The iodine is good for cleaning the skin before surgery, but it can be hard on newly healing skin so it's not good for wounds. There may be glass in the skin, even looking at and feeling the skin it can be hard to tell. If you can't feel any and you have no increasing pain and it's healing, I wouldn't worry. It is possible for the body to push out the glass and sometimes the body heals around it and you have some problems with pain later. See a doctor if you think you still have glass.

If you are ok with shellfish and you are not pregnant you should be fine.

Discuss your concerns with the radiographer before you drink it if it would make you feel better, they are dealing with this all day long and know everything there is to know about it.

Hope this helps.

If one is allergic to iodine, would one also be allergic to quinine?
My aunt is allergic to iodine and shellfish. Her doctor has prescribed quinine sulfate for her leg pains. Is quinine similar to iodine and would she be allergic to the quinine also?

  Hello =)

No, they are not similar at all.... Quinine is a relatively complex compound....

Iodine is a chemical element, and is a common allergen.

Iodine is a common nutrient found in seafood (because of the amount of iodine in ocean water)..

Quinine is not found in ocean water.

Namaste, and Happy New Year,

Has anyone had problems with their salivary glands and what forms of treatment have they received?
I had thyriod cancer last year and they gave me radioactive iodine to kill the cancer tissue. However, that radioactive iodine damaged my salivary glands. Now I have alot of difficulty with them swelling and becoming very painful especially when eating or drinking. I have had three Sialoendoscopys which haven't been successful.
I have also tried different medicines such as Salagen and Numoisyn losenges. But still nothing is working? I have had this problem for almost a year now and my doctor's are running out of things to try.

I think you should keep wetting your mouth.
There is another illness called SJOGREN SYNDROME, in which the salivary glands are destroyed by antibodies. Why dont you contact someone suffering from this condition and take some tips from them.
For your information, I have provided you the link below to the foundation that helps people with sjogren syndrome. Try contacting them

What is the difference between Potassium Iodide and Prolamine Iodine? Can it be use in place of one another?
Any help would be appreciated. :)

Greybear gave half the answer... to finish it, both Potassium Iodide and Prolamine Iodine are supplemental forms of Iodine that both give you a lot of Iodine. They have different levels of Iodine, but you could use either one for Iodine intake.
In regards to the radiation and whatnot, there are a lot of people in the U.S. that are overreacting to the concerns with the radiation in Japan and I'm willing to bet there will be stories in the news within the next several months about cases of Iodine toxicity or about people who overdosed on Iodine because they took too much Iodine to fend off any possibility of Thyroid issues (like what happened around the last couple reactor problems). The thing is, you still want to follow the bottle's recommendations unless your doctor says otherwise... and most of the high-dose products like this only recommend the high dose for a few weeks at the most. If you aren't sure, you really need to talk to a doctor about how much to take. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Where I can order Iodine and Potassium Iodide granules?
I found them awhile back but I can't find them now and I would so much rather make my own like Dr, Clark says to do,

It's not a good idea to make your own. You want to take only products that are from a once living source, not the dead chemicals made in some lab that is not biologically active. Additionally, you need the cofactors found in nature to properly digest and utilize the iodine correctly so it is not toxic to the body.

I have been using a product that is extremely high quality and works really well. Go to: www.healthline.cc (not .com) and order the XENO DETOX. It's really high in iodine of the good quality. If you still are set on making your own, the alternative would be to get some "tincture of iodine" from the store, but don't take it orally, just rub it on your skin and your body will absorb it.

good luck

I need to know the percentage of estrogen in these pills, but I have no idea what the ingredients mean?
The Active ingredients: 10 mg of norethisterone acetate. (I researched about it but I still have no idea what it means)? :/

inactive ingredients: Lactose monohydrate 62 mg, maize strach, povidone 25 000, talc, magnesium stearate.
I need to know how many mcgm estrogen exactly are in that...

What "norethisterone actetate" means is that you have a synthetic progestagen. As far as sex hormones go, you have estrogens, progestagens, and androgens (boys get most of the androgens).

If the only active ingredient in those pills is norethisterone acetate, there's no estrogen in them.

Estrogens are usually going to begin with the letter "e"; estrone, estradiol, etc.

Since when, and why, is regular saline irrigation controlled? Since when do you need a perscription for it?
I know many people are gonna say: "Sterile saline solution is NOT controlled, silly!"

Don't believe me? Go to your local drugstore and try to buy a 1 liter jug of regular, ordinary sterile saline irrigation. You know, the stuff that you can use to flush out wounds with. Simple water with salt.

About a year ago, I had a hangnail removed. As part of the daily care for my wound, the podiatrist instructed me to soak my toe in sterile saline solution with a bit of iodine. I was familiar with it; I had seen the stuff a thousand times before at the store.

Yesterday (7/7/08), I went to go buy the usual iodine and saline solution to rinse out a pretty nasty wound on a friend of mine. Walgreens ddin't have it. Wal-Mart didn't have it. Target didn't have it. I was flipping out. I went to a hospital pharmacy only to see it behind the counter and to be told that I needed a perscription.

WHAT?! Since when? Since when is simple saline solution CONTROLLED? Does anyone have any idea why?

I wouldn't know why saline solution would be a controlled substance... sounds par for the course though! Shoot, you have to show your ID when you buy super glue nowadays! That's crazy!
