Depakote ER to Lamictal XR?
I have been taking Depakote ER for about 7 years for epilepsy and it has worked wonders for my seizures however I gained about120lbs while taking this medication. I am sick of looking how I do so I was talking with my doctor and he suggested Lamictal XR. I was wondering if Lamictal will work like Depakote for my epilepsy and rage, and would I lose the weight I gained from Depakote?

I know what you are talking about with the Depakote, same thing happened to me. I lost the weight after being off the Depakote, I kept doing my usual everyday work which was a lot of walking and I lost it. That med is one which makes you retain fluids you can't get rid of. I was on Lamictal also, it did'nt make me gain weight at all, only side effect to it is if you get too much in your bloodstream you'll have double vision for a little while.

Can depakote interfere with your thyroid blood tests?
I have the understanding that Depakote is not only to treat depression but is said to help those with thyroid symptoms and
people who get migraines. If a person has all the symptoms of hyperthyroid and a nodule is found on their thyroid but they have been on depakote because it was thought they were manic depressive. Then when they go in for their thyroid tests their
thyroid tests come back normal. Could the depakote be interfering with their thyroid test results?

I can't find anything that states that Depakote is said to help those with thyroid symptoms. I can't see how it could possibly help either.

It is extremely common for hyperthyroidism to be misdiagnosed as a mental illness such as bipolar though, due to laziness on the part of the doctor, and unwillingness to run the right tests.

This is from the product insert:

PRECAUTIONS
There have been reports of altered thyroid function tests associated with valproate. The clinical significance of these is unknown.

CNS Effects
Irregular menses, secondary amenorrhea, breast enlargement, galactorrhea, and parotid gland swelling. Abnormal thyroid function tests (see PRECAUTIONS).

What is your experience with Lithium or Depakote?
Im about to go onto either Lithium or Depakote for the treatment of bipolar disorder type II, and was wondering what to expect?

Ive been on venlafaxine for the last 8 months or so, and have had other antidepressants also, but the lithium/depakote is to help with my hypomanic episodes...
Also- as another question, did it seem to "numb" you out so that all other emotions seemed flat as well?

Lithium i couldn't tolerate being on......but that proably included many factors as it was when i was starting to go into denial about bipolar and didn't want to be on meds, and my stupid boss at the time would never let me leave work to get bloodwork done when the only clinic i could go to was only open when i worked, so never got at theraputic levels.

Depakote almost completely levels me out. Side effects with depakote suck....especially first going on it....for me mostly tremors which tapered off after a short time and GI issues, which I have found probiotic suppliments and eating enough fiber was enough to straighten it out......but for me they are worth dealing with for the benifit

Add: No depakote does not numb me out at all. I can not remeber if the lithium did for me or not.....i was just a mess the short time that i was on it.

Is anyone on or know about Depakote & Lamictal XR???Please Read?
My 10yr.old son has epilepsy. He's on 3pills a day of Depakote (250mg each) for seizures, now he is still having problems and was rushed to ER his levels were to high(they were 114). I followed up w/Dr.only for her to tell me to keep him on 2pills of Depakote then add him on 1pill(25)mg of Lamictal till he works up to 2pills of that a day. 2pills of Depakote(500mg)&2pills of Lamictal(50) don't you think that's alot for a 68lb.boy? Is anyone out there who knows anything about or is on these 2pills? Are you having any problems taking these 2 pills together? I've looked up some info but still worried?????Any info would be nice..trying everything here...thanks

I was on both meds also. I was not put on the full doseage right away, Before I started full doseage of meds I was more or less eased up within a month to the full doseage so my body would grow used to the medications,it's not good to start full doseage right away.

As for taking the 2 combined, each person has different side effects. One side effect to Lamictal is if you have too much in your bloodstream you will get double vision,it happened to me before and I would be adjusted to my doseage.

How much weight will you loose getting off depakote?
I've been on depakote for ten years now for seizure disorder. Doctor wants me off to see how I will do or if I've grown out of it. I have had tons of side effects from depakote and have gained some weight(not tons but about 20 pounds) and have water weight issues as well. Wondering if there is anyone out there who has been in the same boat and has lost weight getting off of it. Thanks!

I would say that the best you can expect is you get your previous weight before depakote.

But do expect it to be less considering you are growing and losing weight is a multi-factorial event.

If anyone out there has or is on Depakote ER, could you give me a little insight on what type of side effects you may be experiencing?

It can be a bit sedating and quite weight gaining but that's about it - both of these are worth tolerating as it is a very very effective med for bipolar - I have been stable on it for two years. Side effects depend on the dose - as I am stable I only have to take 750mg (been on 1500 at most) so am lucky with regard to the dose. Pharmacists are experts in meds so you can always talk to the pharmacist where you get your meds dispensed - or the doctor who prescribed it All the best to you.

What is the best antidepressant to take with depakote?
Also, how long does depakote take to work? and can it be used alone for depression as well as mania?

Contrary to what the person said above, Depakote is frequently used to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorder (http://www.depakotebirthinjury.com/manic-bipolar-treatment/) so, this is possible. The drug has been reported to have quite a few side effects though, so I would examine all your options and talk to your doctor about other forms of treatment.

How soon will Depakote help someone with bipolar straiten their moods out, What about Borderline Personality D?
My husband has been on Depakote for about a week now and I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of effect it would have on each disorder. He is being hospitalized now and they diagnosed him with Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar. What effects will depakote have on each disorder and how soon will I see a difference?

I may not answer your question the way you would expect but telling you what happened in my case may be helpful to you.
I was put on Divalproex Sodium (Depakote) for the same diagnosis as your husband. As far as my agitated mania was concerned it proved to be useless. It was difficult for my psychiatrist to ascertain whether this medicine was having any therapeutic use in my case at all. Even if Depakote would have shown clear therapeutic efficacy, the serious problem was the rapid weight gain. I gained so much weight that I was diagnosed with 'Postural Hypertension.' This is reversible, as it was in my case, after I was taken off of Depakote.
Later I was put on Lithium which has proved very effective in controlling my mood swings. Carbemezepine, an anti epileptic drug is also considered as potent drug in treating Bipolar Disorder.
As far as Borderline Personality Disorder is concerned I am doing really fine. No drug is really indicated for this problem. In my opinion to suggest a drug, or prescribe one simply does not make sense. Psychotherapy is what usually works, as it did in my case. Most important is reflection, introspection, which would end up working. These words may seem complicated but the actual process of reflection, introspection become very natural as time goes by.
I hope this helps atleast somewhat. Good luck, hope your husband feels better.

Can having one beer cancel the effect of Depakote ER?
I have been on Depakote ER for 8 days now. I had one beer last night, and had a manic episode where I got into a huge fight with my wife. Things went back to normal after the buzz wore off. I am not an alcoholic and on average, drink two beers per month.
Kimber, you are very misinformed. It was just one beer and you are ALWAYS on this medicine because Depakote ER is an extended release medicine. Most medicines recommend that you don't drink alcohol heavily.

I have agree with Kimber. You shouldn't drink alcohol at all with Depakote ER. I had the same negative reaction after one glass of wine while on Depakote ER. There is a bad reaction mixing the the two in some people. In not saying that some people can't drink while taking it but others, like myself can't.

---Depakote---?
For the past couple refills I have noticed a few missing out of each bottle. I have a 17 year old son and I don't want to automatically point the finger at him becuase I dont even know if depakote can even be abused?
Does anyone know anything about it?

here is some info i found online....The most significant Depakote withdrawal symptom is a seizure. Suddenly stopping Depakote can increase your risk of seizures (even if you have never had a seizure before). These seizures can be especially severe and very difficult to control.....If a person overdoses on Depakote, the symptoms can vary. Some commonly reported symptoms of an overdose of a phenothiazine (such as Depakote) include:

Drowsiness
Heart block (a problem with the electrical system of the heart)
Coma
Loss of life.

Can you gain weight with invega and depakote?
I gained weight like crazy with invega and depakote.
Invega is an antipsychotic medication approved for the
treatment of schizophrenia and depakote is a anticonvulsant.
I actually gained 120 pounds.
I used to be 140 and then I got to 260, now I am 240 pounds.
I lost 20 pounds taking aquatic aerobics and dieting on salads,
vegetables and chicken while still on the pills.
But now I'm on no diet and I just stayed on 240 pounds.

Antipsychotics like invega and mood stabilizers like depakote are notorious for weight gain. Even standard antidepressants like lexapro, prozac, etc. can lead to weight gain, although not as bad as the drugs I mentioned above. I gained 20 pounds in 2 months from taking the antipsychotic seroquel.

Have invega and depakote improved your symptoms? I guess what you have to do is weight the pros of possibly feeling better versus the cons of weight gain. Of couse, gaining weight often brings on feelings of depression and similar problems.

I CANNOT offer you any guarantees, but what helped me lose about 20 pounds in 3 months is an old, very inexpensive natural remedy that might sound strange to you. Put 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (ACV) and 1 tablespoon of honey in 8 ounces of warm water and drink this mixture. Do this two (or possibly three) times a day. It may take a while to get used to the taste. If you really don‘t like the taste, add extra honey.

Use ACV brands like Braggs, WholeFoods, Eden's, Spectrum, etc. or other organic unfiltered brands from a health food store, not stuff you buy in a regular grocery store. Also avoid the ACV capsules sold in grocery stories and drug stores. They are a waste of money. As I said, the ACV did work for me. For the 3 to 4 weeks, I don't think I lost an ounce. In the second and third month, the weight started to come off. After about 5 months, my weight stabilized at 25 pounds less than it used to be.

If you want to try for more weight loss, I have read of people taking 2 to 3 tablespoons in water a day! There are lots of suggestions in the link below. Of course, you have to eat a nutritious diet with few fattening foods. ACV won't do it all. I don't know if it is possible for you, but any kind of exercise you can do can help your mood and your weight. Start small, like 10 minutes a day, and work your way up. Even brisk walking can help.

http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/weight_gain.html

If you want a huge google link about acv, go to http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=0h&oq=apple&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS336US336&q=apple+cider+vinegar+health+benefits

I don't know if this weird remedy is what you were looking for. To be honest, I can't guarantee it will work for you. But I think it is worth giving it a try. At least know that you are not alone in struggling with weight gain from psychiatric meds. I wish you the best.

How different is Divalproex vs Depakote ER?
My Dr must have written the script wrong and I didnt get the extended release. Im going to pop a Divalproex 250, but Im scared it will make me sick compared to Depakote ER? If anyone knows if there is a big difference let me know.

They are the same thing. ER is just extended release.
that means it releases the medication gradually throughout the day till your next dose.

Depakote is just the name brand.

If the 25o mg they have you on makes you as sick as the ER did or sicker you might need to adjust your dose or get a new medication. Discuss your side affects with your doc asap so you can get on something that works for you be that depakote or something else.

can a overdose of the prescribed medication called depakote ER cause a stroke?
I work in a home for mentally ill people, one of our residents was given 3000mg of depakote instead of his normal 2000mg and sence then has found out he had a stroke.
Amy C
05/27/08
Reply
Unlikely. Depakote is associated with potential blood thinning, not clotting, and unless the person weighed significantly under 110 lbs, 3000mg was still within the therapeutic dose range (i.e. not an overdose). That said, it depends on the person, the other meds s/he is on, and her/his physical condition. But, unless it was an interaction with other meds, the stroke probably was there waiting to happen.

Wrong dosing of psych meds is never cool. It does have physical effects (feel sick, fatigued, mentally foggy, etc) even if not life threatening. I agree w/the first person on this. The ppl s/b reported.

This is a link to the prescriber info sheet. It includes side effects and dosage information. http://www.rxabbott.com/pdf/dep3.pdf

How long does Depakote remain in your body?

Neurologists diagnosed me with Epilepsy back in 1993 and initially they put me on Dilantin, and was on it for over ten years. But it never helped me because I was still having seizures and it was so distressing. Then in 2003/2004 they put me on Keppra which worked better but Keppra is documented to create significant mood changes. (when I was on it I felt like punching people in the face and everything made me mad, even though I'm normally a docile and kind person) But in 2005 after a visit to a Neurologist specializing in Epilepsy he put me on a drug called Lamictal (generic name: Lamotrigine). I haven't had a single seizure since! It's been a god-send! Lamictal is prescribed for a couple of different afflictions, including people with severe depression or who are bi-polar. However, the mental effects are far less significant than Keppra.

depakote and multivitamins?

The multivitamin that you are taking is just Vitamin B complex which does not interact with Depakote. Vitamin B complex may cause liver damage if you overdose on it. At regular doses, it will not cause liver damage. Also Depakote may cause liver failure. That's why you need to get your liver function tests performed at baseline and at regular intervals after initiation of therapy, especially within the first 6 months because liver damage has usually been reported within 6 months of depakote initiation. Your doctor should closely monitor you for appearance of discomfort, weakness, facial edema, anorexia, jaundice, and vomiting. If you experience any of these side effects, you should also let your doctor know immediately.
Your doctor should have told you about this already. As long as your tests are within range and you do not overdose on Vitamin B complex, you can take them together. However, you should always tell your doctor and pharmacist about any supplements and herbs you are taking.

How does the epilepsy medication Depakote affect unborn children?
I have heard some recent studies about the side effects of Depakote and that it might cause certain birth defects. I am wondering if someone has medical information on what it is in the medication that causes these birth defects and why? What is the mechanism or active ingredient that is suspect?

Depakote, in both delayed-release tablet and capsule form, is used to treat certain types of seizures and convulsions. It may be prescribed alone or with other epilepsy medications. The delayed-release tablets are also used to control the manic episodes--periods of abnormally high spirits and energy--that occur in bipolar disorder (manic depression). An extended-release form of Depakote, Depakote ER, is prescribed to prevent migraine headaches. The delayed-release tablets are also used for this purpose & Abilify is used in the treatment of schizophrenia, the psychological disorder that causes its victims to lose touch with reality, often triggering hallucinations, delusions (false beliefs), and disorganized thinking. The drug is thought to work by modifying sensitivity to two of the brain's chief chemical messengers, serotonin and dopamine. Racing thoughts? I'm not too sure about that one. Anyway I hope the info I found for you helped you out alot. Since I helped you would you mind answering a few of my questions please? Have a nice day & good luck with everything.

Depakote ER?
I have been diagnosed with Manic depression and Borderline personality disorder. My doctor has given me Depakote ER to take, and I am just wondering what the side effects are to be expected?

I have researched it, and found that one of the side effects can be throwing up. I have a horrible phobia of this so I'm just curious as to if there is a big possibility of this occuring?

Also, is it better to take this in the morning or at night?

Thanks so much
so weight gain is fairly common then? ... wow ok thank you for that info!!

Depakote er or Depakine is similar to what I am using now. There are some side effects in the beginning, but usually they disappear pretty quick. The most trouble I had with shaking hands. Be prepared to have this for at least 3 till 4 weeks or even longer. Once your body is getting used to the Depakote this will disappear. Don't worry, your body must adapt to the dosis and sometimes they will raise or lower the doses. Other side effect is that you can temporary loose more hair. Mostly it comes back. You can also like more or less food. Do not eat the socalled junkfood, but take good care of yourself. HEALTHY food is a must. And let some one control your intake. It is always the best to take them immediatelyu after the meals, morning and evening or even morning afternoon and evening, depending on the dosis. My dosis is 1250 mg, in tablets of 500 mg. I take 1 in the morning, a half in de afternoon and 1 in the evening, during or right after the meals, to avoid problems with the stomach.

By the way, DON'T use it when you have had problems with your liver or stomach before and have your blood checked now and then. If you use much Depakote ( the natriumvalproate is the actual thing working, so Depakine is the same) you must take care to get pregnant, the man must be careful too. The change that your baby is handicapped is greater. First ask your doctor.

You can also visit my website: jacob.soet.tripod.com. I will publish facts about borderline there soon and you will find also information about stress. By the way, I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses, but that is not limiting my information for you. Just take what you like from my site. I hope that you will have benefit from my answer. Having borderline is very difficult, both for you and the people around you. Never give up trusting good friends!!!

Use the depakote with a glass of water, neither warm neither cold. Its after some experience easy to swallow, I have seldom problems with it. They are covered with a jelly that makes it easy to swallow them. NEVER chew it, it must be consumed as a whole!!!! SUCCESSS!!!!!!

Cerebral palsy and myoclonus?
my wife has CP. She was a preemie breach birth. She also has Bi-polar disorder. She is on Lithium 300mg caps--3 caps AM, 4 Caps HS, Depakote ER 250mg tabs--3 tabs PM, and Effexor ER 75mg caps--3 caps AM. She takes the depakote for sleep. In the recent months her myoclonus is increasing, and her stamina is also decreasing. Her shaking is so bad that now she needs help with drinking and eating. Can the meds cause that or can her CP get worse as she age?

Have her meds changed? That's the first place I'd consider.

I know next to nothing about CP. All I can do is share my experience on these meds. Maybe something will be useful. Just remember, each person responds differently.

Lithium can cause tremor, it's a common side effect. I only get a slight one in my left hand when I am dehydrated or something like an underlying body one when my blood pressure is real high (hard to describe). I have a friend who says it can magnify anything underneath for her. These two are abstract, non-medical descriptions. Not really sure how to describe.

Effexor made me shakey, but it also made me manic.

Depakote just makes my hair fall out while making me hungry... and my brain loves it, so I deal with the side effects.

Not sure if that helps at all.

Depakote® (divalproex sodium) is a prescription medication used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It is also used to prevent migraines. As with most medications for seizures, stopping Depakote is not recommended without your healthcare provider's approval. Stopping Depakote quickly is also not recommended. Although Depakote is not addicting and is not likely to be abused, stopping it too quickly can cause seizures to worsen.

The great or, in this case, not so great, thing about modern psychotropic medication is that it...takes...so...long...to...get...out...of...our...systems. This is true for virtually all of them that were developed later than 1989. All I can recommend is to impress upon your doctor that this is distressing you and you need to start your new meds ASAP.   Valproic acid may cause serious or life threatening damage to the liver. The risk of developing liver damage is greatest in children who are younger than 2 years old and in people who are taking more than one medication to prevent seizures, or who have any of the following conditions: a severe seizure disorder and mental retardation; certain inherited diseases that prevent the body from changing food to energy normally; any condition that affects the ability to think, learn, and understand; or liver disease. Tell your doctor or your child's doctor if you or your child have any of these conditions. Your child should not take any other medications to control seizures while he or she is taking valproic acid. If you notice that your seizures are more severe or happen more often or if you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: excessive tiredness, lack of energy, weakness, stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, or swelling of the face.

Valproic acid may cause serious or life-threatening damage to the pancreas. This may occur at any time during your treatment. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite.

Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain lab tests to check your response to valproic acid.

Talk to your doctor about the risks of taking valproic acid or of giving valproic acid to your child.

Before you start to take valproic acid, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking valproic acid, call your doctor immediately. Valproic acid can cause birth defects. Be sure to read the manufacturer's information for women who could become pregnant. Talk to your doctor about the risk of taking valproic acid during pregnancy.

Valproic acid is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures. Valproic acid is also used to treat mania (episodes of frenzied, abnormally excited mood) in people with bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). It is also used to prevent migraine headaches, but not to relieve headaches that have already begun. Valproic acid is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by increasing the amount of a certain natural substance in the brain.

A good way to find out for certain is, to call a pharmacy and ask to speak to the pharmacist.

They have that information right there and it's trustworthy.
