Question about ear drops called neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and hydrocortisone?
I went to the doctor because I had a blind pimple in my ear but wanted to make sure there was no infection.... The nurse noticed a little swelling and ear wax build up.... The nurse gave me neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and hydrocortisone ear drops.... My ear was fine until I used the drops.... I used the first drops last night at 10:00 p.m. and my ear has been blocked since... It feels like there could be water in there and I have done everything to get it out...

My question is has this happened to anyone?? Is this normal with ear drops??? Any more suggestions on how to get the water out and this blockage to go away??? I can't hear out of my ear

yes, its normal but if you still feel that blocking after few hours then please do consult that nurse again.
in the mean time just clean slowly your ears with ear bud to absorb that liquid.

Neomycin and Polymixin B sulfates are OTC topical antibiotics; hydrocortisone is an OTC antinflammatory. These medications are often found together in cream and/or unguent form. They are used to prevent infection in minor cuts, abrasions, superficial burns, insect bites, etc. They are to be applied to the affected area 2-to-3 times a day; if condition doesn't improve within 5 days or seems to get worse, you should discontinue use and consult a physician.

The actual expiration date should be printed on the bottle. That expiration date is for an unopened bottle. Once the bottle seal has been opened, the contents are no longer sterile and have been exposed to the environment, which over time leads to deterioration and decreased effectiveness.

Each state's pharmacy board determines whether a discard date is required on the prescription label. Most states mandate 1 year (or less). This is an arbitary date although it is based on studies that have shown that regardless of storage conditions most drugs will still be potent after one year. However, this is for the most stable dosage forms, tablets and capsules. Sterile ear or eye drops are less stable once opened and some manufacturers suggest discarding 3 to 6 months after opening.

Hope this helps.

neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and hydrocortisone otic suspension?
Can this be used as a medicine for pink eye?

No, the "otic" part means it's intended for your ear (to treat an ear infection). Don't use this in your eye.

Neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates are antibiotics. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid anti-inflammatory.

If you have conjunctivitis (pinkeye) it's best to see a physician and get an optic (eye) solution.

Neomycin, Polymixin B, and Bacitracin are all antibiotics. The hydrocortisone is a steroid.

The antibiotics are used to treat an infection, and the hydrocortisone is used as an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling.

At home treatment for corneal abrasion?
I have been to the doctor for this before, and I was prescribed an antibiotic eyedrop. (Neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and hydrocortisone opthalmic suspension)
Now I have been using saline solution and a little visine, along with the antibiotic/antihistamine eye drops. What should I be doing in the meantime? I want to kill myself this hurts so bad.

hmm. how do you know its an abrasion? i have many, many patients think thats what they have b/c it feels like other things. cant really go by feeling.

if you're a contact lens wearer, its probably not an abrasion.

*IF* it were to be an abrasion, you could:

1) wear contacts (believe it or not)
2) pressure patch

the problem with those 2 are: if its not an abrasion but rather an infectious or inflammatory problem, then you could be causing great harm by doing one of those.

why not go to the eye doc? just to make sure

Continued use of ear drops until it is empty?
I am using a Bausch and Lomb otic suspension with neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and hydrocortisone.

Rx says instill 5 drops 4 times a day. The oral med is gone. should I continue with the suspension until it is gone ?
Rx does not give an end date. Doc did not specify to use until out or not.

Ear infection, weird substance coming out of my ear, should i be worried?
I have been taking azithromycin tablets and Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Hydrocortisone Otic ear drops treating my ear infection for 4 days now. There is this pink ear waxy substance that is coming out of my ear now, I was just wondering if anyone knows if this is a bad sign or maybe just a sign to show that its healing. Thank you for any help you can give!

Loss of Hearing after ear infection?
I had an ear infection a week ago and the Doctor prescribed me Bactrim DS Tablets 800/160 to take 1 tablet twice daily for 5 days. And prescribed me Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates And Hydrocortisone Otic Suspension, USP Drops to take 4 times a day. I am done with the medicine and now i have loss of hearing in both ears. What should I do??/ Im done with the medicine. I am 16 years old.

Absent tenderness of the outer ear or discharge of pus through ruptured eardrums, your probable loss of hearing is due to fluid/mucus trapped behind the ear drums after a middle ear infection.

In this setting the ear drops are irrational and are adding to your sense of hearing loss, and should be stopped.

The clearing of your ears requires drainage of the snot down your eustachian tubes into your throat (nasopharynx).

Best OTC intervention would be guaifenesin/pseudoephedrine
(Mucinex).

Antibiotics.?
I'm uncircumcised, and I sort of over masturbated, and since I don't use lubricant, the skin of the penis became irritated and starting peeling off. So now I'm using "Triple Aintibiotic Ointment" on it to prevent infection. (Polymyxin B sulfate - Bacitracin Zinc - Neomycin Sulfate)
What would happen if I left the antibiotic ointment on for extended periods of time? Like if I went to sleep with it, would anything harmful or negative happen? How often should I "renew" the ointment?

Thanks for your answers.

Is Rx Bacitracin for opthalmic use the same as Bacitracin Zinc?
I was given an Rx but I already have a couple packets of Bacitracin Zinc. Are they the same?
This is going on the eyelid, not actually in the eye, BTW.

They aren't exactly the same, but I don't know if the topical one would hurt except that I'm sure it would burn like hell if you got it in your eye. I'd recommend getting the ophthalmic one, or the pharmacist might be able to tell you in the store because he or she would have the package inserts that they could check and see just how different they are.

The concentration of bacitracin is the same according to what I can find, but my concern is that the inactive ingredients may not be appropriate for use in or around the eye.

My dog's eyelids are infected, what caused it, what more can I do?
Casper's eyes are infected with what is probably a Bacterial infection. He has had this problem for 2 1/2-3 weeks now. We have been to the vet for the past 2 weeks (2 visits) and he has him on an eye ointment (Neomycin and Polymyxin B, Sulfates, Bactracin Zinc, and Hydrocortisone Acetate Ophthalmic) 2 times daily (I use the Cone to keep him from rubbing the ointment off with his Paw). ALSO, he is on Baytril 20 Mg Tabs, and Temaril-P (Just in case it had something to do with an allergic reaction). We have had him on the Antibiotics now for 1 full week and his eyes are still very puffy and red. The small glands of his eyelids are very swollen- due to the infection. I don't know what it is. Is it a bacterial infection.... Could it be something else?? Please look at his photo and tell me your opinion.

PS. He is an indoor dog who only goes out occasionally. He is 2 yrs old.

Here are his pics.:

Our dog has been suffering from the same thing since July 23rd! Your poor pup. We have been back to the vet 3x's and his meds have been switched twice. On our last visit, the vet said, "If he doesn't respond to this antibiotic eye ointment, you'll have to take him to the ophthalmologist." So...he didn't and once we stopped the steroid pills, his eyes got so red and inflamed. I have a call in to the eye doc and hoping to get in today. Please keep me posted and I'll keep you posted. You can email me directly ......
Best to your pup and you. It's so worrisome.

It certainly sounds like balanitis or a yeast infection.

I'm not sure you should be using that ointment - it might help now, but it could also make things worse later. There are things you could try.

First, make sure you pull back your foreskin and wash under there every time you take a shower/bath. Only use water, as it's possible that if you used soap on your foreskin/penis, that could be the cause of your balanitis. Some soaps are just too harsh for the sensitive skin there, so try not using any soap for a few days. When you're done, make sure you dry the area gently with a towel or let it "air dry" for a minute or two before returning your foreskin back over the glans (penis head).

When you urinate, pull back your foreskin and when you're done, wipe the last drops of urine on either a piece of toilet paper or the back of your hand (you're going to wash your hands anyway). This will help prevent drops of urine from remaining under your foreskin which could sometimes make balanitis/yeast infections a bit worse.

Next, you could try applying body lotion to the affected area. If it's dry, flaky, itchy, etc, applying lotion to where that's happening could help. Lastly, drink cranberry juice and eat yogurt, as these foods help the body fight off yeast infections.

I hope this helps. If it doesn't clear or get better within 2-3 days, then call your doctor. He/she will have some kind of antibacterial/antifungal cream for the area. Oh, and it may be a good idea to abstain from masturbating or sex until you're foreskin's back to normal as friction can make things worse.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis?
My doctor prescribed me Zylet,it's working ok but i was wondering what is better for bacterial conjunctivitis Zylet or Tobradex?? 2nd Question: Does Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone work for conjunctivitis??

I usually prefer Zylet. Zylet is tobramycin + loteprednol, and Tobradex is tobramycin + dexamethasone. The tobramycin is the antibiotic. Dexamethasone and loteprednol are both anti-inflammatory agents, but loteprednol has a lower incidence of raising the pressure in your eyes. All three (Tobradex, Zylet, and neo/polyB/dex) are acceptable for bacterial conjunctivitis, though your doctor usually has a preference (as I do) from their experience and from keeping up with recent studies.

Can I use this bottle of previously prescribed antibiotic eyedrops for pink eye?
I had pink eye last year and the doctor prescribed "Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension LSP". In fact, I'm not really sure if this is the antibiotic so I'd like confirmation on that, too. If it is, could I use it right now for my eye? Will it clear up by tomorrow? I can't miss school on Monday! (new semester)

I wouldnt. Chances are that the medication is out of date, check that it should be on the bottle. But if you are one of the people who put the dropper on your eye to get the eye drop in, there is already pink eye in the medication, and you'd just be reinfecting yourself.
You dont have to miss school monday, just tell anyone who asks, you poked your self. just dont touch that eye for anything, not even makeup sorry!!

red eyes very dry like sand is in them, itching and irritated been to reg doc and was given eye drops?
neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and dexamethasone eye drops. He does not have pink eye or anything in his eyes. Doctor does not know exactly what is wrong, suspects allergies. He has some allergies but , not bad. He said if it does not get better then he will have to go to eye doc maybe.
To any eye doc out there.....What could this be? I am not asking for a diagnosis but, mainly what kind of things could cause this? They have been like this for a month and a half and he has been on drops for 2 weeks, with very little to no releif.......THANKS

If his eyes don't get better soon, take him to an eye doctor. When I was a teen, my eye turned red, it mattered, especially at night, and it felt like I had sand in them. It turned out being herpes in the eye. Yes, the virus that causes cold sores on the lips can infect the eyes too if your immune system is run down. If herpes in the eye isn't treated immediately, you can lose your eye.

Ear infection healed with amoxicillin caps and drops with neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and hydrocort susp
Could one specify the type of infection given what cured it? Does it narrow the set of possible causes? Best guess, what is the most likely culprit?

I am 36 and this was the first ear infection I have had since I was 6. So I was a bit worried at first. I went to the doctor after 2 days of symptoms... earache, pain in the eustachian tube area below the ear. I had used Q-tips regularly inside the ear canal with care... meaning not hitting the eardrum. Doc said to stop that which I have and will never do again.

Just curious as to what bug might do this and how to avoid it if possible.

I can't stop blinking my eyes.?
lately, for the past two days, i have been blinking soooo much. Like twice every second. Literally. It feels my eyes are cold, and there is constant blowing. Like its the feeling when you stick your head out of the window in the car. It might just be the cold. Because here in Wisconsin, it's like almost 0 degrees.

I've been using some OTC eye drops, that don't help at all. I found in my parents medicine cabinet some type of eye drops. I don't know if they are eyedrops though. THey seem strong. They are called Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Gramicidin Opthalmic Solution USP. I'm afraid to take it cuz i don't nkow what it is. I need some relief is all.

I kind of had the same problem because i was constatnly blinking for no reason. I don't know if it was because i was nervous about something or what, but it eventually went away. I would also call your docter if it continues to do that for the next 3-5days.

What are the complications from an ear infection?
I was diagnosed with otitis externa a week ago and had to go back to the doctor again since the ear drops didn't work, actually made it worse. To begin, my inner ear was EXTREMELY itchy so I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with otitis externa so she gave me ear drops, Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Hydrocortisone, so I was like ok. She said if it doesn't work in four days than she would have to see me again. It didn't work it actually made it worse, still EXTREMELY itchy and now it is muffled and feels full. So, I went back and she looked at it at and she said she is going to give me a different ear drop, acetic acid otic solution 2%, and if that didn't work - improve in three days to call her to schedule an appointment for an ENT. So, I am on day 1 and it seems to be worse than the other medicine - now I can't hear and feels full. So, my question is if it doesn't improve what should I expect at the ENT's?

It's itchy because it's healing. You have an outer ear infection, and they are much different than a middle ear infection (the more common "ear infection" people talk about). What you have is more commonly called swimmers ear.

The fullness could be to you also having a middle ear infection or from wax impaction. Just wait and see. It could be that you have a fungal infection or a bacterial infection that is resistant to the drugs your doctor gave you. An ENT is much more versed in the treatment of ear diseases and will probably clean your ear out and prescribe more drops for you. This will give them more direct contact with your ear instead of with wax or other debris.

You are asking about antibiotics (cephalosporins, bacitracin, polymyxin B) and antimycotics (griseofulvin). Actually, any germ can develop resistance to any antibiotic treatment. Plus, cephalosporins is a group of antibiotics, with 4 generations and each generation differs in efficacy against bacteria.
