Can Nitrofurantoin cause stress or crabby mood?
I was prescribed 100MG of Nitrofurantoin twice daily for a week. I took my first pill around noon, and ever since then I've felt stressed and in a horrible mood. Is it the medication or just me?

I did a little research and found this answer:
http://www.everydayhealth.com/health-questions/nitrofurantoin/is-there-a-safe-over-the-counter-painkiller-i-can-take-with says this, "It is surprising and concerning that you are still in immense pain. Discuss this with your physician. There are over-the-counter pain medications that would be safe to take with nitrofurantoin (Furadantin, Macrobid, Macrodantin), however, there are other factors such as your allergies, other medications, and disease states that need to be considered before recommending a specific product. There is also a prescription medication called phenazopyridine (Pyridium) that is often prescribed along with antibiotics to treat the urinary burning, itching, frequency, and urgency associated with urinary tract infections. Please contact your health care provider about this immense pain as it could be a sign of other issues. Also see these links to further information: http://www.everydayhealth.com/drugs/nitrofurantoin, http://www.everydayhealth.com/drugs/pyridium, and http://www.everydayhealth.com/health-information/urinary-tract-infection-in-women-treatment.aspx. "

My own knowledge is that antibiotics can be taken with pain reliever as long as the medicine or accompanying medicine does not already have a pain reliever in it. Ibuprofen is a tissue relaxer so if there is not already one in the medicine it should be fine.
http://www.everydayhealth.com/drugs/ibuprofen says, “Ibuprofen is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Ibuprofen works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. Ibuprofen is used to reduce fever and treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as headache, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps, or minor injury.”

Although I do know a little about medicine remember I am not a doctor or pharmacist so if you are really concerned you should contact your local hospital or pharmacy. Good luck and best wishes.

Sometimes a persistent bladder infection could actually be something else, like chlamydia. You might need a stronger, broad-spectrum antibiotic like Cipro.

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic so she might get an upset stomach, but since she is only 1 years old think it would be in your best interest to call the hospital and ask them if its safe for her size because it might be needed of the poison control center if it is too high of a dose for her to handle.

100mg of Nitrofurantoin prescribed to be taken before sex for prevention?
I have experienced multiple urinary tract infections following intercourse. My doctor prescribed nitrofurantoin to me and advised that I take it before intercourse or immediately following to aid in preventing a UTI. Is this safe? When doing research online, I'm reading a lot about "finishing all of the medication" which leads me to believe that taking just one dose of it may possibly create a resistance to this antibiotic. . .

some docs advocate that or bactrim. Macrodantin can turn urine brown color... finishing all the med is if you have a full blown uti. he should have done a urine culture to be sure... if not, go to gyn doc.

It would have no effect at all on your period. Take a test to be sure you are not pregnant.

What is the difference between the antibiotic Bactrim and the antibiotic nitrofurantoin?
I was diagnosed with a bladder infection. One doctor prescribed me Bactrim and another doctor prescribed me with nitrofurantoin?

Bactrim is in the classification of anti-infectives called sulfonamides and is a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim called co-trimoxazole. It's used to treat UTIs caused by strains of E. coli, Proteus, Klebsiella or Enterocobacter.

Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) is a miscellaneous anti-infective, no specific calssification, and is also used to treat UTIs caused by E. coli, certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterocobacter and also Staph a. and enterococci.

If you had a urine culture and the organism was identified as E. coli, Kelbsiella or Enterocobacter, then either one will work. Find out what is causing the infection.

can you take these to medicines together doxycycline monohydrate and levonorgestrel together and they work?

The Doxycycline will work. The levonorgestral will not work to it's fullest strength.

If you are using the levo as a contraceptive and the doxy temporarily, use a back-up contraception for the next cycle to be completely safe. You will probably experience spotting, and your cycle may get a little off for the next month. It's not a definite of the latter.

Hi sibutramine is only supposed to be used very short term for weight loss or it usually leads to high blood pressure and other complications that can cause heart problems. My husband used it for four months and the side effects were worse than him needing to lose weight. He came off of it after our doctor said he had to, which should have been done much sooner. He now uses some supplements and products from shapeworks, which our doctor advised and he has continued to lose weight safely and steadily. He now uses their heart health products to keep him safe and make sure his blood flow is fine. I would recommend you either see your doctor or visiy www.myhealthabc.net, they give great advice and have helped both of us to improve our health. Good luck to you, I hope this helps.

I need to know the percentage of estrogen in these pills, but I have no idea what the ingredients mean?

What "norethisterone actetate" means is that you have a synthetic progestagen. As far as sex hormones go, you have estrogens, progestagens, and androgens (boys get most of the androgens).

If the only active ingredient in those pills is norethisterone acetate, there's no estrogen in them.

Estrogens are usually going to begin with the letter "e"; estrone, estradiol, etc.

Infant UTI?
We were in a small dilemma on one issue regarding Esha’s health and thought of writing to you. We would be grateful if you could kindly consult some good doctor on what line of action we should take.

During examination of Esha’s Urine Culture they have found the presence of E. Coli bacteria (100,000 organisms/ml – which is significant). However, in the Routine Urine test there is no indication of Pus cells. The test has been repeated a number of times and is showing the same result. Esha has had a couple of bouts of fever (upto 100.5 degrees) over the last one and a half months. We have also got the ultrasound of abdomen done, which is normal.
Now there are two clear views amongst the Peadiatricians here:

One doctor says that this must be treated for Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) by giving antibiotics as repeated tests have shown presence of E Coli.
Esha’s Urine Culture test shows that this bacteria is sensitive to Amikacin,
Cefoperazone+Sulbactum, Meropenem, Piperacillin+Tazobactum, and
Nitrofurantoin. These are all very strong antibiotics. They have suggested that the only antibiotic that can be given without hospitalization is Nitrofurantoin.

The other doctor has insisted that Esha has no symptoms of UTI and this is a case of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria. It should not be treated with antibiotics.
In fact if treated it increases the risk of symptomatic UTI at a later date.
This clearly puts us in a difficult choice.

We would be grateful if you could consult some good doctor and tell us about their thinking on this issue. The jury seems to be clearly divided.

There should not be e.coli in urine at all! Urine is naturally sterile. You need to start practicing better hygiene. Let me guess. This is a girl? Please, please, please start being more careful and practicing scrupulous hygiene in that area, or you are in for a serious situation. Be happy that (s)he is asymptomatic for now, hope that (s)he can get rid of the current e.coli infection using her own immune system, and don't let her get another infection.
